Gennaro, the son and heir of the Savastano clan, and Ciro Di Marzio, one of this clan's officers, have great ambition to advance to ever-greater heights.

The path ahead is bloody and cruel, and their families will be put at risk. Written by YaverMbizi. A very well-made TV series about the Camorra mafia in Naples.

The director is not holding back on the dirty and gruesome details that classifies this organization. I must say that i'm very impressed with the crew shooting the series at the actual drug-ghetto as their location of choice.

It gives a more authentic feel to the viewer. If you haven't seen the movie Gomorrah from i must recommend that you see it first.

But i do feel that the series is of much better standards. Thumbs up! All Titles TV Episodes Celebs Companies Keywords Advanced Search.

All Critics 19 Top Critics 14 Fresh 18 Rotten 1. Despite its familiar construction, "Gomorrah" is significantly more frightening than others in its genre because of the history behind it.

Gomorrah perhaps is a more realistic depiction of the mob mentality. But I wouldn't want to break bread with any of these guys.

Nor do I care what happens to them. In this series, the mob is as elemental and unavoidable as death, whose cruel finality visits these people with grisly regularity.

The characters can't shake their environment -- and once "Gomorrah" puts its hooks into you, you'll feel the same way.

The deliberate hindrance of characterization, along with the show's narrative and literal opacity, mostly makes for 12 hours of alienation. It makes you realize how dull a bird's-eye view probably is most of the time.

For those who like mafia shows and the sort of anti-hero dramas that have become the stock in trade of "peak TV", this is another excellent entry.

Gomorrah demonstrates that the world of organized crime is as narratively rich as ever, bringing a decidedly modern spin to the genre that is distinctive from beloved predecessors like The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.

Gomorrah is at its finest when it's exploring the petty grudges and festering resentments that its characters on all levels -- from highly positioned gangsters to low-level bag-men -- nurture with grim unhappiness.

Gomorrah is The Sopranos on steroids, presented here in Italian with subtitles and minus any symbolism about ducks, mommy issues or a fretful therapist.

Honestly, the mobsters here would think Tony was a wuss and would put a bullet between his eyes. A dark and brutal series based on journalist Roberto Saviano's nonfiction book of the same name, Gomorrah carefully and beautifully depicts the far-reaching corruption of a new -- but fictional -- Neapolitan crime syndicate.

Gomorrah the TV show is frequently punishing and often riveting, though ultimately humorless and somewhat shopworn. It's an entertaining watch for fans of mafia shows, though it doesn't venture far beyond the genre's well-established conventions.

In , Giovanni Pettinato claimed that a cuneiform tablet that had been found in the newly discovered library at Ebla contained the names of all five of the cities of the plain Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah , Zeboim , and Bela , listed in the same order as in Genesis.

The names si-da-mu [TM. Sodom and Gomorra. Rabbi Basil Herring, who served as head of the Rabbinical Council of America from to , writes that both the Rabbinic tradition and modern orthodox position consider the Torah to condemn homosexuality as an abomination.

Moreover, that it "conveys its abhorrence of homosexuality through a variety of narrative settings", God's judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah being a "paradigmatic" instance of such condemnation.

Rictor Norton views classical Jewish texts as stressing the cruelty and lack of hospitality of the inhabitants of Sodom to the "stranger". Rabbinic writings affirm that the Sodomites also committed economic crimes, blasphemy, and bloodshed.

Because of this, the judges of the two cities were referred to as Shakrai "Liar" , Shakurai "Awful Liar" , Zayyafi "Forger" and Mazle Dina "Perverter of Justice".

Eliezer was reported to be a victim of such legally unjust conduct, after Sarah sent him to Sodom to report on Lot's welfare.

The citizens also regularly tortured foreigners who sought lodging. They did this by providing the foreigners a standard-sized beds and if they saw that the foreigners were too short for the beds, they would forcibly stretch their limbs but if the foreigners were too tall, they would cut off their legs.

Beggars who settled into the two cities for refuge were similarly mistreated. The citizens would give them marked coins presumably used to purchase food but were nonetheless forbidden, by proclamation, to provide these necessary services.

Once the beggar died of starvation, citizens who initially gave the beggar the coins were permitted to retrieve them, provided that they could recognize it.

The beggar's clothing was also provided as a reward for any citizen who could successfully overcome his opponent in a street fight.

Two girls, one poor and the other rich, went to a well, and the former gave the latter her jug of water, receiving in return a vessel containing bread.

When this became known, both were burned alive ib. When the scandal was revealed, the woman was stripped naked and covered with honey. This attracted bees as the woman was slowly stung to death.

Her cries then went up into the heavens, the turning point that was revealed to have provoked God to enact judgement upon Sodom and Gomorrah in the first place in Genesis Jon D.

Levenson views a rabbinic tradition described in the Mishnah as postulating that the sin of Sodom was a violation of conventional hospitality in addition to homosexual conduct, describing Sodom's lack of generosity with the saying, "What is mine is mine; what is yours is yours" m.

Avot 5. Jay Michaelson proposes a reading of the story of Sodom that emphasizes the violation of hospitality as well as the violence of the Sodomites.

Reading the story of Sodom as being about homosexuality is like reading the story of an ax murderer as being about an ax.

The verses cited by Michaelson include Jeremiah , [Jeremiah ] where the sins of Jerusalem are compared to Sodom and are listed as adultery, lying, and strengthening the hands of evildoers; Amos —11 oppressing the poor and crushing the needy ; [Amos —11] and Ezekiel —50, [Ezekiel —50] which defines the sins of Sodom as "pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

And they were haughty, and did toevah before me, and I took them away as I saw fit. Two areas of contention have arisen in modern Christian scholarship concerning the story of Sodom and Gomorrah: [62] [63].

And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where [are] the men which came in to thee this night? Yada is used to refer to sexual intercourse in various instances, such as in Genesis between Adam and Eve:.

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the L ORD. Some Hebrew scholars believe that yada , unlike the English word "know", requires the existence of a "personal and intimate relationship".

Countering this is the observation that one of the examples of "know" meaning to know sexually occurs when Lot responds to the Gen request, by offering his daughters for rape, only three verses later in the same narrative:.

Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing The following is a major text in regard to these conflicting opinions:.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

This reference to "going after strange flesh" is understood in different ways to include something akin to bestiality, having illicit sex with strangers, having sex with angels, but most often God's destruction of the populations of the four cities is interpreted to mean homosexual same-sex relations.

Many who interpret the stories in a non-sexual context contend that as the word for "strange" is akin to "another", "other", "altered" or even "next", the meaning is unclear, and if the condemnation of Sodom was the result of sexual activities perceived to be perverse, then it is likely that it was because women sought to commit fornication with "other than human" angels, [70] perhaps referring to Genesis 6 or the apocryphal Book of Enoch.

Trivia A visitor to the set was veteran Italian director Francesco Rosi who praised Matteo Garrone 's "anthropological interest" in his subject matter.

Goofs At the beginning of the movie you can clearly see the character named Amerigo belly moving, when his dead body remains on the chair, where he has been having his nails cut.

Set in Naples in the s, the series follows Ciro Di Marzio, a member in the Savastano Camorra clan of Secondigliano , headed by Pietro Savastano.

When Pietro is arrested, an internal power struggle breaks out with his rivals as well as between the "old guard" of the clan and the "young guard" headed by his son Gennaro Savastano.

Ciro and Gennaro eventually find themselves at odds with their own families, and the several alliances they make with various criminal groups, as they navigate the Naples underworld.

In Naples , the Savastano clan is commanded by the dreaded and respected Pietro Savastano. Looking to make his mark, Ciro Di Marzio is tasked to burn the house of the mother of Salvatore Conte, a rival drug lord.

After completing the task without hesitation, and slowly gaining the trust of Pietro, he later entrusts Ciro to ready his son Gennaro to become the future head of the clan.

Following a police check, Pietro is arrested and taken into custody; control of the clan unofficially passes into the hands of his wife, Immacolata, who deems Ciro and Gennaro unable to run the clan in Pietro's absence.

Immacolata, who maintains a dislike for Ciro, orders him to travel to Spain in order to make-up with Conte and reunite the clans.

She later tasks Gennaro to travel to Honduras, hoping his interactions with drug producers will fast-track his development into becoming head of the clan.

Despite being able to make peace with Conte, Ciro is frozen out by Immacolata, a sentiment that is shared by Gennaro once he returns to Naples. Gennaro, becoming more detached and isolated, begins a cleanup of the clan's members, inviting more younger comrades, while engaging in actions which leads to the distrust of the old guard, including Ciro, who find him unable to handle the clan.

A civil war then ensues between the two factions of the Savastano clan: the old guard who are faithful to Pietro, and the younger members who are faithful to Gennaro.
